Netflix has not only smashed the competition, but set the tone for the future of watching movies. Other movie rental companies have been playing catch up ever since Netflix came into existence. They have trying to come up with their own schemes to win back their customers. But Netflix has finally sealed the deal.
Netflix has for sometime had the option to stream movies over the internet for sometime now, but its crutch has always been on how to view those movies. Most people watch the movies on their small computer monitors. Then there are the lucky few who either have the knowledge or the equipment to watch the movies on their TV's.
Recently Netflix stepped it up a notch and worked with a company to make a dedicated piece of hardware that was capable of streaming movies straight to your TV without a computer. The downside, its only purpose was to stream Netflix movies. That is a big risk to consumers if Netflix goes away or changes something to their policy, they are left with a piece of hardware that does nothing.
So, when they recently announced that they were going to be working with Blu-ray players to be able to stream their movies through the players, now they were on to something.
By incorporating the streaming capability into something that already serves a purpose, they have accomplished two goals:
Blu-ray players aren't the only ones getting this capability, Xbox 360 and I'm sure the Playstation 3, will be getting software updates to support Netflix streaming.
So for all those other movie rental places out there still renting DVD's and VHS's good luck staying in business with your current business model.
